5-Paragraph Essay

A 5 paragraph essay is the most commonly found and easiest essay to write. The general layout includes an introduction, three paragraphs forming the main body of the essay and a conclusion summarising the main thesis of the essay.

The introduction highlights the main idea of the essay and the theme to be used to study and confirm the thesis in a format that will attract the reader. Introductions must be short and to the point. The last sentence in the introduction should outline the point which follows in the second paragraph. This is so the reader can quickly link the ideas without having to put in any inference to work out the relationship between the paragraphs.

The first paragraph of the main body should include the most important point relevant to the essay, which has also been outlined in the introduction. It should be supported by strong evidence that can be substantiated. Facts and figures cannot be provided unless the source is indicated in the essay so that it can be found and checked if necessary.

The second paragraph should include the second most important point or a continuation of the one made in paragraph one with further elaboration It must be backed up with suitable evidence.

The third paragraph proceeds in the same way as paragraphs one and two with another point or a continuation of a previous point with supporting evidence.

The conclusion is a summary of the thesis of the essay but no new points should be added. In the summarising the three main points should outline the way forward for additional study so that it can be seen that some thought has gone into the essay.
